But soon Aela's mother began to age, and she noticed that her daughter and her husband never looked as they should; thirty years passed, and Aela didn't ever look a day over twenty. Her aging process had officially screeched to a halt, just as a Shapeshifter's should. It terrified Tabitha, so bad that she went screaming to the police about immortal freaks that had possessed her family. Sadly, this only resulted in her admittance to an Insane Asylum.
As for Aela, her newfound abnormality shocked her. She fled her home, taking up the false name of Caroline Taggart, and going to live in the west. She never went back to her father, and didn't ever find out what happened to him. She couldn't have cared less, really. He'd lied to her about who she was, therefore he didn't deserve to have her as a daughter.
She found work as a farmhand in California - back then it was a peculiar job for a woman, but the farmer didn't care as long as the work was done. Aela soon moved on, though - she never stayed in one place for long. If she did, someone would eventually uncover her secret - which she knew nothing about.
One day in August of 1950 - for nearly forty years she had been hopping around the country, watching it develop and grow while her age seemed to progress as slowly as a snail - she received an anonymous tip from a courier. He stated that he had no idea who it was that gave him the letter to deliver, but they had paid well so it hadn't mattered much.
Inside the envelope, Aela found a single slip of paper with a few words on it: Lady Liberty, September 5th. Be there. Someone wanted to meet her.
Albeit reluctantly, Aela followed the instructions, ending up at the Statue of Liberty on the morning of September 5th After traveling clear across the country. A man in a trench coat met her there, who Aela immediately recognized as her father. Before she could turn away and leave, he grabbed her arm, telling her that he could help her understand what she was. Control the power that had been passed down to her.
And so it went. Aela's father taught her everything she needed to know about her stance as a Shapeshifter, and tutored her on the real world; angels, demons, and fae did exist. After almost a decade, she had mastered the act of Changing into other supernatural beings, as well as the four things her father taught her: how to control electricity and fire, how to become invisible for a short amount of time, and how to read minds by touch.
Simply put, after that, they parted ways, never to see each other again. Aela was grateful for what knowledge her father had given her, but she could never forgive him for lying to her mother and herself.
Life dragged on as Aela hopped across the country, changing her name illegally through a source that her father had told her about - an organization of Shapeshifters dedicated to creating false documents for their kind - every ten years. Somewhere along there she found the MARVEL comics, as well as the Star Wars movies and things, which quickly became her passion and obsession. It wasn't long, though, before the 21st century reared it's ugly head, bringing technological advances and things along.
But the day that shook the nation to it's core - 9/11 - was a major turning point for Aela. She devoted her life from then on to the country she had been born in. Her false birth certificate gave her the age of 23 and the name Aela Peters, so she joined the US Army and fought the battles that others had waged. Her abilities helped her survive, as did the friends that she made while deployed. She quickly advanced through the ranks, and currently stands at 1st Sergeant. The military also taught her self-discipline and drove her to limits she never knew she had.
And she loved it.
